Celebrate lower tolls and use SBX for free on June 30

Circle Saturday, June 30 on your calendar — that's when across-the-board toll cuts for South Bay Expressway customers take effect. To mark the historic occasion, everyone is invited to a free community celebration taking place that Saturday at Otay Ranch Town Center in Chula Vista.

The family-friendly celebration will feature live music, entertainment, kids' crafts, and more. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the center at 2015 Birch Road. On the day of the event, traveling on the Expressway will be toll free from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Click here to find out about special event-only promotions.

After the price cuts take effect, new tolls will range from 50 cents to $2.75 for FasTrak users and from $2 to $3.50 for cash and credit card users. The low tolls translate into savings of up to 40 percent, depending on where drivers enter and exit.

Also, the monthly minimum toll usage requirement will drop from $7 to $4.50 for most FasTrak customers ($3.50 per FasTrak account plus $1 per transponder). For example, accounts with one transponder have a minimum toll set at $4.50, accounts with two are set at $5.50, accounts with three are set at $6.50, etc. And customers will earn credit toward their monthly minimum toll amount when using either the South Bay Expressway or the Interstate 15 Express Lanes.

SANDAG Board Votes to Lower SBX Tolls

In a first-in-the-nation action by a public toll road operator, the San Diego Association of Governments Board of Directors unanimously voted on May 25 to authorize an across-the-board reduction in tolls on the South Bay Expressway. It will take approximately one month to implement the toll reductions.

The plan will cut tolls for all trips. The new, lower tolls will range from 50 cents to $2.75 for FasTrak users and from $2 to $3.50 for cash and credit card users. The plan also will reduce the monthly minimum toll amount from $7 down to $3.50 per account plus $1 per transponder.

SANDAG new operator of the SR 125 toll road

The San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) has purchased the lease to operate the South Bay Expressway, and is the new operator of the facility as of December 22, 2011. During the next few months, users should not notice any change in the operations of the toll road, and FasTrak customers do not need to make any changes to their account. In the coming months, the SANDAG Board expects to begin a process of lowering the tolls on the facility. REDUCED TOLLS FOR BIG RIGS AND CASH/CREDIT CUSTOMERS AT THE OTAY MESA TOLL PLAZA TO CONTINUE

Last February, we announced a three month promotion; lowering tolls for cash and credit card -paying customers on trips beginning or ending at the Otay Mesa Toll Plaza. We also lowered tolls for all trips on SBX for big rigs (5-plus axle vehicles) during the promotional period. We are pleased to announce that based on customer response, we have decided to continue with reduced tolls for these trips. Beginning June 1, 2011, cash and credit card tolls at the Otay Mesa Toll Plaza will be $4.00 per trip, which is 50 per trip less than the pre-promotion $4.50 per trip toll. Big rig tolls will remain at the promotional level of two times the two-axle toll. You can view the June 1, 2011 toll schedule by click here.
